Epic fantasy series are great. But sometimes you don’t want to commit to three or more novels! Sometimes you’re just looking for a quick read, or a story that stands on its own.

If that’s the case, then look no further. Here are 12 of our favorite standalone fantasy novels. Some of them have sequels, and others are even part of trilogies, but all of them are self-contained stories.

Whenever the subject of Timothée Chalamet comes up with my friends, I try really hard to pretend that I don’t find him just as attractive as everyone else in my friend group does, because it just feels like it’s too easy. Like, yeah, he’s adorable. He’s got sharp features that could easily cut the nice French cheese he probably eats on a daily basis. Got it, nice, moving on—what else?

Well, thankfully, there’s a lot else. While it’s fair to point out that he, like many young actors, is a product of nepotism, however mild, I truly acknowledge him as one of the most talented actors in our age group. He’s got a very distinct style and range, and he picks really interesting projects to work on. These are the projects highlighted in this list of Chalamet’s best roles.

Film studio A24 has a reputation for showcasing more avant-garde fare than the typical film studio. As a result, some moviegoers tend to poke fun at the studio for its seemingly pretentious fanbase. Still, it cannot be denied that A24 has released some of the most thought-provoking and intriguing films of late.

The best part is, A24’s slate represents a wide array of genres and themes, from mind-gutting horror films to evocative indies that make viewers stare pensively at a wall for two hours after. With that being said, here are some of the best films that A24 has released so far.

Sometimes, life can be a real downer, you know? Whether it’s as temporal as having a bad night’s sleep, as minor as a takeout place forgetting the hot sauce (okay, but is it minor? You were really looking forward to that sauce!), or as serious as when you’re going through something major that you just can’t seem to shake—low points are something we all go through. And we’re all valid in our ebbs and flows. It’s okay to be sad when you’re sad.

That said, there are times when we really need an escape. To laugh. Or happy cry. Or just remember that the world has some goodness in it (look, Alligator Loki exists, and that’s something to hold onto!). And in those moments, I find it helps me to watch a good movie, the kind that will offer comfort and perspective in the times when I need them the most. So, here are some of my favorite movies that are particularly uplifting, without being overly saccharine to the point of lacking relatability.

A recurring debate among TV watchers is whether or not the “binge all at once” trend is a good thing, or a bad thing. I don’t watch enough TV to have a concrete opinion on this, but I will say that I’m finding it pretty annoying to have to wait every week for a new episode of What We Do In The Shadows.

This show has always been the sort of crackpot joyride that delivers in a very particular way, which makes each episode’s ending feel even more abrupt. I’d imagine that many viewers feel the same way, especially since this particular season has been giving us a lot of memes to work with.

I have this very odd memory of being at some guy’s party when I was younger, and as it was winding down, he put on Spirited Away. I commented that in my house, we grew up with Ghibli movies and that I was happy he was putting it on. But this guy was trying very hard to be cool, so he just rolled his eyes and told me to be quiet. I remember feeling so stupid at that moment, yet also so annoyed—why did this random white guy get to claim ownership of a thing he only liked to appear cool?

Yes, it’s petty I bring this up now, but I can’t help but feel vindicated in a way. Whereas for some people, getting into Ghibli movies was just another niche way to feel different from the herd, for myself and other Asian kids, it was just another rite of passage. I’m not trying to gatekeep here: I’m trying to re-open the gates, to remind everyone that artsy and nerdy white kids aren’t the only ones who can watch these movies!

Spellcasting in Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a blast, and I’ve only completed the game as a sorcerer! The range of spells—from offensive to defensive and everything in-between (and out-of-bounds)—has been immensely fun to explore and play around with. Knowing that there’s still so much left to discover makes me appreciate the combat in this game even more.

That said, after tooling around with spells across all classes, I’ve come up with a list of those I would consider to be must-haves in any playthrough. Of course, YMMV, so feel free to add your own two cents in the comments.

Look, I may enjoy playing video games, but I’m not a fan of the stereotype that gamers don’t take pride in their appearance. I absolutely love fashion, and choosing my outfits is half the fun of every outing I plan. Sometimes, if I need to cheer myself up, I’ll even dress up just to get a cup of coffee and people-watch. Thankfully, there are organizations out there like Mixed Asian Media, who will be hosting the very first Mixed Asian Day on September 16th!

Prior to this new day of celebration, there has only been one other “holiday” dedicated to mixed-Asian folks: Los Angeles’ “Hapa Day,” which I’ve covered previously. And Hapa Day was only established as recently as this past May 19th! Not only have these sorts of acknowledgments been a long time coming, they also merit using a name that doesn’t directly take from indigenous Hawaiian culture, hence why I’m so excited for Mixed Asian Day.

Well, this guide has been a long time coming. I would have had it up sooner, but believe me when I say that Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3 is MASSIVE. Both in sheer scale and quest number, Act 3 is easily the biggest, most overwhelming part of the game, so I found myself needing to slow my pace way down. We’re talking maybe one quest per night, just so I didn’t burn myself out. Gaming is a marathon, not a sprint, people!

This was the right choice because I was better able to appreciate Act 3 for what it was: an epic end to an absolutely epic adventure. Since the earlier parts of the game move at a “go, go, go” pace, it can feel daunting to traverse the massive city of Baldur’s Gate, let alone explore all the quests it has to offer. The whole thing can feel positively overwhelming.

I took my time and still barely even scratched the surface of all the content you can discover and experience.

What might makes things a little less massive is knowing that Baldur’s Gate 3 is divided into three separate acts. Each of these acts varies in scale, quest variety, and narrative scope, yet they all come together seamlessly to create a pretty memorable adventure.

In total, it took me about eighty hours—seventy, if you don’t count the ten or so I spent backtracking because I was a silly willy and forgot to cure the shadow curse. Considering how the developers at Larian Studios said that a “truly” full playthrough of their game could easily take more than 100 hours, I certainly can’t speak on the entire breadth of this game in totality (yet …). However, those 80 hours felt so much fuller than other games that have easily taken me longer to complete.

In most games, NPCs don’t really serve a purpose beyond filling the world with character, and therefore aren’t given much character in return. Unless they directly contribute to a main quest or plotline, NPCs are relatively bland, both looks-wise and personality-wise.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, then, that Baldur’s Gate 3 really took the NPC game to a whole new level. Throughout my playthrough, I’ve been consistently delighted with characters who aren’t really that important, beyond maybe one or two sidequests. To me, they symbolize how much care and attention Larian put into this game, and they ultimately serve to make the world feel more colorful, alive, and easier to feel a part of.

As Maggie is a classically trained actress, with an education from the London Academy of Music and the Dramatic Arts, I braced myself to do a lot of post-script research after our interview.

However, the way that Maggie experiences both art and the craft of acting, both in body and in voice, is something that’s much more universal and communicates well to even the most lay of laypeople (raising my hand, here). As I grew to know her more, from her background as a voice actress to her philosophies regarding her craft, I understood even more why she’s such a tour de force within her field.

Yes, if that sounds harsh, it’s because I formed this opinion as a teenager who was half-white and grew up in the suburbs, so I was definitely projecting a little bit. Yet this opinion did somehow carry into the future, resulting in a Gilmore Girls-less young adulthood.

However, after watching many videos from channels like The Take and WatchMojo about shows like Girls and Sex And The City, I couldn’t help but notice that Gilmore Girls was always brought up. In particular, they always tended to reference the alleged “messiness” of Star Hollow’s star pupil: Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). This always bewildered me, since compared to the teen rebels of my favorite teen shows, Rory seemed a little too buttoned-up to be particularly “bad.”

And honestly? Wig. The show ended very beautifully for what’s essentially a non-stop gagfest. Video games are weird things to wait for, largely because of the unpredictability of development cycles. With movies, you can generally bet on there being a set finish line for production. With albums, you don’t really hear much about the finished product until it’s ready to start poking its head out. But with games, so much rides on fan anticipation that they’ll let you in on the concept way in advance, sometimes even before the concept is fully fleshed-out.

Such was the case with Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, which first debuted a teaser trailer in 2018.

I’ve already outed myself as a sucker for mysterious pretty girls with a penchant for meanness, so it should hopefully come as no surprise that one of Starfield‘s companions immediately got my attention. I am, of course, talking about Andreja, the tough, roguish companion who, yes, fill’s the game’s goth slot.

Honestly, I’ve been looking for more reasons than just “it’s a Bethesda game” to justify buying Starfield, both for its massive price and all the space it’ll take up on my computer (125 gigs is a lot to ask for, Todd). And since I care more about story and character design than gameplay and graphics, it was a good sign to me that at least one of the companions seemed to be up my alley. As for the others … well, hey, I still need to give the game a chance, but companions have never been Bethesda’s strong suit.
