Trump’s decision to appoint a politician with as extreme views as him has both pros and cons. On the one hand, his decision could be a good thing as it certainly won’t win him over any new voters. The extremists whom Vance appeals to are already firmly behind Trump, and his appointment will only likely turn away moderator voters, which are the votes Trump needs most. At the same time, if Trump wins the election despite the unsavory duo of him and Vance, it paints a bleak picture for America’s future. Although Trump can’t run for a third term, he’ll have a Vice President thoroughly steeped in the MAGA movement to carry on his legacy in the next election.

What set Simmons apart was his pure enthusiasm and belief that anyone could find freedom through movement of their body. At an event last month, speaking to the Faith and Freedom Coalition, Trump addressed the issue of changing the names of institutions like schools and military bases or other locations. As someone who lives in the South, I’ve seen the importance of changing these names (and the backlash to those changes) firsthand. What’s important to keep in mind when discussing buildings and institutions named after Confederate figures and other historical racists, is why they got those names in the first place. It is vital that generations learn the intimidating tactics of racists throughout history. They wanted to salute people to show that what they did could still be celebrated. This was an attempt to sort of rub it in our faces in a way.

Butker, a kicker for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, went viral in May after he gave a commencement speech to the graduating class at Benedictine College. Instead of using his speech as a chance to inspire and encourage, he used it to express his hateful views as he attacked the LGBTQ+ community and women. He shamed the graduating women in the audience by telling them they needed to stay in their lanes and become mothers and wives. Butker minimized their accomplishments as he insisted their lives would only start and be fulfilling when they got married and had children. At least one woman present at the speech spoke out about how awful the experience was and how it made her graduation day less special.

In almost every election in Britain, novelty candidates come out of the woodwork to run for a seat as an MP (Member of Parliament) in their local area. It’s a tradition that has been firmly cemented since the 1980s when the Monster Raving Looney Party registered two candidates. (This year they had 22 running). Their motto: Vote for insanity. As a Brit myself, I can very much say that this is very much a part of our humor. Comedy has long been used to take jabs at politics, and this is just another form that takes. The thing is, with even the once well-respected parties looking like ridiculous options in their own right, these “novelties” don’t actually seem all that out-there.

The year’s first presidential debate was held on June 27 and was disappointing. Some social media users have shared hilarious videos comparing the latest debate to the 2012 presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The debate between two courteous, charming, and well-spoken middle-aged men in 2012 was a stark contrast to the 2024 debate, in which two elderly men exchanged roasts, bickered about golf, and made numerous false or misleading statements. Trump, a convicted criminal, lied his way through the debate, while a listless Biden stumbled his way through his answers and suffered numerous gaffes.

Personally, I think Biden is never the orator we would ideally want, but his speech impediment has a lot to do with that. It seems America has forgotten that rather large part of his life and history, that he has addressed directly and thoughtfully in the past. Yes, Biden is old. That also plays a factor. Trump is old too though! Not as many people want to talk about that. Trump bragged and bragged about how fit he is physically and cognitively and we are just supposed to believe it … Anyway. I am not delusional enough to think that this was a great performance from the President. I do wish he seemed more energetic and on top of his game. I wish he hadn’t used anti-abortion rhetoric or made false statements about military deaths. I am sure his campaign behind the scenes was panicking. I think this is more indicative of this country though, and what we think is important.

To be clear, Biden did offer an abysmal performance in the debate, resulting in serious discussions about the Democratic Party considering another presidential candidate. The biggest issue wasn’t that the president occasionally stuttered or sometimes took a moment or two to gather his thoughts but that he made several major blunders and a few misleading statements. For example, at one point, he bizarrely claimed, “We finally beat Medicare.” At another point, he used misleading anti-abortion terminology when referencing “late-term abortion.” He also made the obviously false statement that no military deaths have occurred under his administration despite the devastating and deadly suicide bombing in Kabul in 2021.
