Is 2024 the year of Gail Simone? Even considering the GLAAD and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer’s illustrious career, 2024 already has Simone shattering more industry-related glass ceilings.

In March, Marvel Comics revealed that she’s set to take over as the new Uncanny X-Men scribe in August, making her the first female solo writer of the X-Men’s flagship title “in its 61-year history.” Shortly after that news, Simone announced that she’s helming Rebellion Publishing’s resurrection of horror host Misty in an all-new one-off 48-page anthology, Misty 2024, arriving on July 17.

In 2023, author/illustrator Maia Kobabe’s graphic memoir Gender Queer was the most-banned book in the U.S. Part memoir, part guide to understanding gender and sexuality, Kobabe started the book as a means of explaining what it means to be nonbinary and asexual to eir family.

It’s since become an award-winning, adored graphic novel. Despite the ALA reporting 106 challenges against Gender Queer in 2023, Kobabe has remained an outspoken advocate for trans rights and the freedom to read. And now, thanks to Listening Library, readers will have a whole new way to access Gender Queer. In May, it will release a full-cast audiobook production of the graphic novel, featuring Kobabe reading as emself. Joining em is eir sibling Phoebe Kobabe, André Santana, Jeremy Carlisle Parker, Stephen Graybill, and Trini Alvarado (who played Meg March in 1993’s Little Women).

The neat thing about movies and television shows based on comic books is that there’s a solid chance they’ll draw a whole new swath of readers to the original book series, and Amazon’s animated series Invincible is certainly no exception to this rule.

What’s supremely interesting about Invincible‘s case, however, is that, unlike the mythologies of the big two superhero empires of Marvel and DC, Invincible has an ending. Indeed, there are no reboots or continuity resets for the Grayson family; once the story wrapped back in 2018, it was well and truly wrapped for good.

I’ve been in this business for a lotta years now, so youse can say that I’m sort of an expert when it comes to DC villains. I’ve worked for the best of the worst, from Zack Synder to the Blue Beetle marketing team. And after all my years, I can definitely say that these are the ones you definitely DON’T wanna call “boss”

10. Catwoman

Catwoman in the moonlight in DC Comics
(DC Comics)

Catwoman sounds like a dream gig. She mostly works solo, leaving henchmen like me to sit around and collect a paycheck. She’s also one of the most iconic female DC characters of all time. That’s something that you want on your resume. The problem with Catwoman is that she’s not really a villain at all. Sure, I get that her morally grey character choices give her “complexity” and such, but it doesn’t do good for workplace morale watching your boss flirt with the guy who broke both your legs the week before.

In the new highly-anticipated X-Men ’97 series, one of the mutants loses their powers in an unexpected twist. To understand how devastating the loss is, one needs to understand what it means to be an omega-level mutant.

As one can see in X-Men ’97, not only do mutants have different powers, but they also have very different levels of power. For example, Gambit (A. J. LoCascio) is quite powerful, boasting the ability to charge objects with pure kinetic energy. However, it’s easy to see that his mutant abilities can’t generate the same level of sheer power as Cyclops’ (Ray Chase) eye beams, which are estimated to be more potent than even the blast of an atomic bomb. Similarly, while multiple members of the X-Men could hardly contain an unruly crowd of protestors, Magneto (Matthew Waterson) is able to halt the crowd within minutes.

Dragon Ball Super follows the story of Son Goku and his friends during the 10-year time skip after they defeated Maijin Buu. The manga has been ongoing since June 20, 2015, appearing in the pages of shōnen manga magazine, V Jump and Viz Media for English readers. Written by Toriyama and illustrated by Toyotarou, Dragon Ball Super has received an anime adaption as well as two films and kept the magic of the first Dragon Ball, the defining manga of a generation, alive and well.

I know that I am biased, but Spider-Man does have the best villains. Sure, Batman has his rogues’ gallery, but Spider-Man’s villains often have a personal vendetta against our friendly neighborhood fave, which makes ranking his villains particularly difficult because how do you pick the best of them?

Peter Parker often ends up fighting his former friends, teachers, or people who just really don’t like that he’s a kid trying his best as a superhero. Occasionally, he fights one of his girlfriends, and that’s a lot for little Peter Parker! So why not go through his 10 best villains and see who is the best among them?

Marvel Comics has revealed the cover of their June Pride issue, X-Men: The Wedding Special, which will see long-time queer couple Mystique and Destiny tie the knot.

Marvel’s annual Pride issue is something queer fans look forward to every year, and it’s exciting to see one of X-Men’s most prominent queer characters make it official. Destiny (Irene Adler) and Mystique ( Raven Darkhölme) have been linked ever since Chris Claremont co-created the characters in 1980 and 1978, respectively.
