There are two things I love in this world: making linguistic sense of written symbols with my eyeballs as a vehicle to understand abstract works of fiction, and free stuff. And you’re telling me that there are apps that will let me combine my two great loves? Bet.

Here are eight free apps to access books, ranked by their libraries and actual free-ness.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Is it Bushwick rooftop weed? No! It’s the unkillable Tree of Heaven as a metaphor for perseverance! A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith is the tale of Francie Nolan, a young girl growing up in Williamsburg in the early 20th century. There are no yuppies at coffeeshops sucking down six dollar cold brews here. It’s all working class people, down on their luck and dreaming of better lives. Francie’s family is one of them. Her mom works like a dog, while her dad drinks like a fish. And all she wants is an education to make her way in the world.

The Yellow Wallpaper

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is both one of the finest works of horror fiction and a brilliant work of early feminist literature. Written in the 19th century, The Yellow Wallpaper tells the story of a woman who is locked away in a room by her husband and doctor in order to treat her “nervous condition.” As the woman continues to remain in solitude, she begins seeing another woman trapped in the yellow wallpaper that covers the room. And thus, a slow descent into madness begins. The best part? By going absolutely feral, the woman begins to experience a sort of freedom of her own.

The Satanic Verses

Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses got the author in a boatload of trouble. The book was banned in the U.S. by title alone, it was deemed heretical to the tenants of Islam by Ayatollah Ruhollah Musavi Khomein of Iran, who issued a fatwa against the author calling for his murder. Why? The book is a rhapsodic recount of Islamic history and myth, where plane crash survivor Gabriel takes on the aspect of the Islamic angel Jibreel (the angel Gabriel in Christianity) and is whisked between the material and the supernatural planes. It must be read to be believed.

Anthony Doerr’s All The Light We Cannot See is a Pulitzer Prize-winning banger set against the backdrop of World War II. One of the major themes of the work is light itself (hence the title). While the boy sees visible light that the girl cannot, the pair are connected by the mutual fascination with radio waves that are imperceptible to both, and that connection will change their lives forever.

Few authors are as synonymous with “beach read” as Elin Hilderbrand. The writer’s lush, extravagant, and quietly aspirational novels are all set on the tranquil “billionaire’s isle” of Nantucket, Massachusetts, transporting readers to rocky shores and sandy beaches even in the dead of winter.

Hilderbrand’s novels are mostly romances tinged with a mystery-thriller side. She has written more than twenty-five of these beachy reads to date, although she recently told The Wall Street Journal that the appropriately-titled Swan Song (2024) will be the last of the Nantucket-based novels. “I have run out of really good ideas for Nantucket novels, and I don’t ever want to put out a product that is subpar,” Hilderbrand explained.

Goodreads had to lock reviews of Republican vice presidential candidate J. D. Vance’s awful Hillbilly Elegy memoir, likely due to review-bombing, but this may be a case where those bad reviews are well deserved.

On July 15, Donald Trump appointed U.S. Senator Vance as his 2024 running mate, and the announcement has raised interest in Vance’s career and political views. Although he has been critical of Trump in the past, Vance has since aligned his views firmly with the MAGA movement, supporting a nationwide abortion ban and repeating sentiments of the white supremacist Great Replacement Theory. However, Vance isn’t most well-known for his fairly fresh political career. He’s arguably more well known as the author of  Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, which was also adapted into a film starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close.

What happened to Rickon Stark? Short answer: a lot. More than any young boy should be forced to deal with. But in the world of Game of Thrones, children have to grow up real fast. But some children don’t get to grow up at all (RIP Butcher’s Boy).

If only he were a relative of Tony, and could live the good life with a bajillionaire superhero uncle to help guide him through the world. But Rickon Stark wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his hand, it was Valyrian steel. Rickon Stark is the youngest child of Eddard Stark, the Warden of the North and lord of Winterfell castle during the reign of Robert I Baratheon. Rickon is only but a wee boy when the action of Game of Thrones starts, three years old in the books and not much older in the HBO series. Rickon spends his days hanging out with his siblings, playing with his direwolf Shaggydog, and begging his half-brother Jon Snow for sweets. It was a good life for the young boy.

Who reads graphic novels? In short, everyone. Don’t believe what you’ve been told about the comic book industry. In 2015, an ALA study of great graphic novels for teens showed that 46% of titles featured one or more female characters.

Sometimes, the graphic novel gets a bad rap as the format that screwed over Alan Moore (in that regard, there are probably valid complaints). However, the format also brought with it previously unknown creative freedom.

One San Francisco woman has found a unique way to fight book bans. Operating out of the small bookstore Fabulosa Books, Becka Robbins has been sending LGBTQ+ books to states with limited access to such books due to book-banning laws.

Book banning has been on the rise across the nation ever since conservative politicians and parents turned their culture-war sights on books. While many books have faced challenges and bans, LGBTQ+ books are the most frequently targeted. Although conservatives claim that they’re removing “obscene” or “sexually explicit” books from schools, the real purpose behind the movement has always been to censor any book that doesn’t align with the right-wing agenda. Hence, books about women’s issues, abuse awareness, Black history, and LGBTQ+ topics are most frequently being pulled from school libraries and even from public libraries. Many states have begun passing legislation that makes it easier to pull books from schools by the hundreds or even to instigate statewide book bans.

Described as the most beautiful dragon ever to live, the golden-scaled Sunfyre was the personal mount of Aegon II. Sunfyre served a pivotal role in the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war between the forces of Aegon II and his half-sister Rhaenyra Targaryen that tore Westeros apart. Sunfyre allowed Aegon II to win a number of decisive victories, including the Fall of Dragonstone, which dealt a fatal blow to Rhaenyra’s campaign. The victory was a pyrrhic one, as Sunfyre later died of the wounds he sustained in the battle against the dragon Moondancer, after eating Rhaenyra Targaryen alive, of course.
